Chris Petersen

Associate Conductor

Chris Petersen has been an active member of Barrie’s music community since he was a child.  A classically trained bass-baritone, Chris has enjoyed performing as both a chorister and soloist for various community, university and professional ensembles for the past 15 years, working under the direction of such esteemed conductors as Noel Edison, Lee Willingham, Steve Winfield, and King Edward Choir’s own Barb McCann.  Most recently, he has been involved with the Toronto Choral Artists, a semi-professional choral ensemble that promotes the work of young and emerging Canadian composers, under the direction of founder Mark Vuorinen.  Chris is also the bass section lead of the Toronto Chamber Choir, a leading early music choral ensemble.

Chris received his formal education from Wilfrid Laurier University, earning a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Music Theory.  He continued his studies at the University of Toronto, obtaining a Bachelor of Education from OISE/UT, followed by a Master of Arts degree in Musicology and Music Theory.  Chris maintained vocal studies throughout his education under pedagogues such as Daniel Lichti, Victor Martens, and Peter Barnes, and in 2004 was the inaugural recipient of the Keith Knights Memorial Scholarship Fund for performance at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Professionally, Chris had the opportunity to design and teach a new music theory course at the University of Toronto in 2009, and is currently supply teaching for the Simcoe County District School Board following his return to Barrie.  Chris is thrilled to be back working with Barb McCann and the King Edward Choir, and looks forward to working with the choir throughout the coming season.
